ABOVE THE WATER
Located 350km northwest of Tahiti, Rangiroa is the largest & most populated atoll of French Ploynesia. Surrounded by two legendary bodies of water Moana-tea (Peaceful Ocean) and Moana-uri (Wild Ocean) the main villages of Avatoru & Tiputa offer the visitor an unique look at the South Pacific. Along the few roads, coral churches, craft centres, local restaurants & tiny shops provide enjoyable land-based experiences to complement the many water based activities available.
BELOW THE WATER
Rangiroa’s lagoon, enclosed by a coral ring set with hundreds of green islets, covers an area of nearly 1500sq kilometers with the waters being an average of 35 meters deep. Beneath the surface of this huge inland sea lies a water-world of rare beauty for diving enthusiasts. The most popular diving sites are the Blue Lagoon, Avatoru pass, Tiputa Pass & Les Sables Roses (The Pink Sands). When the current is flowing inward through Tiputa pass about 200 sharks gather at its entrance in fifty meter deep waters. Large Manta Rays, Green Seas Turtles, Dolphins & Humpback Wrusses can also be seen. In January large numbers of Stingrays gather in the Pass which in turn attracts the Hammerhead Sharks that feed on them.
