WWII wrecks and wild reefs in the Western Solomons
Gizo, in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands, has some of the most varied diving in the Pacific. The waters around it hold WWII history, with the Japanese freighter Toa Maru and several wartime aircraft, including an American Hellcat fighter in clear, shallow water. Between the wrecks are drift dives along coral walls, pinnacles that draw pelagics, and reefs where you can expect reef sharks, rays, turtles and schools of barracuda and trevally.
Fatboys sits over the water just off Mbabanga Island, about 10 minutes by boat from Gizo airport and 15 minutes from Gizo town. The bungalows are built in traditional style from leaf thatch and local hardwood. Each has a large veranda facing the lagoon, a bed with mosquito net and an open-air bathroom with hot showers.
The restaurant and bar sit at the end of a long jetty out over the reef. The menu is à la carte and built around fresh seafood such as crayfish, mahi-mahi and reef fish, served with local beer, cocktails and a small wine list.
