We’ve all been there, that inevitable moment that you crack it and life at that moment just seems too hard. Life builds and builds until everything compounds and you just lose your cool. There are some people nodding in agreement right now, and others who are shaking their head in furious denial. Whether you want to agree of not, it’s human nature for it all to become too much. THAT moment, is when it’s time to book a holiday.
The question is, where is the ideal place to unwind? Where do you go? How long for? What kind of activity?
Here are our top picks of places to go when life has just gotten too tough!
UNWIND IN THE PHILIPPINES
The Philippines is a fantastic destination to go to when you need to get away. With beautiful beaches that aren’t too “over-touristy” yet, cheap flights and not too far yet not too close to Australia, this is the perfect last minute destination. As well as great diving and beaches, you cannot go past Philippino hospitality, cheap cocktails and of course cheap massages! With so many well priced packages and deals year round, it’s a no-brainer. 10 days here and by the time you leave the Philippines, you’ll probably be tanned, relaxed, needing a detox and feeling as tender as a piece of wagyu beef!
UNWIND IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS
If unwinding means not allowing your mobile phone or emails to go off at you at all hours of the day and night (Fess up, your mobile phone will appreciate being turned off for the – Afirst time in 6 months), the Solomon Islands may be perfect for you. Tranquil and relatively undeveloped, the Solomon Islands has some fantastic locations such as Uepi Island where you can dive, snorkel, swim, bushwalk, read a book and just get some necessary R&R. With no phone reception, internet, facebook or just general communication with the rest of the world, you’ll either relish in the piece or suffer serious withdrawals, but either way your overworked mind will thank you for it (as will your international data pack on your phone). The Solomon is an easy six or so hours (depending on your departure city), which is a small price to pay for such isolation.
UNWIND ON NINGALOO REEF, AUSTRALIA
If leaving Australia and communication with the rest of the world is just a little too much, but you want to get away from home, why not head up to Ningaloo Reef? Perpetually overshadowed by its big brother “The Great Barrier Reef”, Ningaloo Reef is renowned for its spectacular untouched reef 10m off shore (as opposed to hours on a boat) and of course its influx of Whale sharks from May – August every year. A little more expensive than some of its South Pacific / Asia competition, but there is no going past the beauty of our own country, and support your own economy while you’re at it… Plus, no passport! Too easy.
UNWIND IN JAPAN
If you’re looking to still stay connected with the world and enjoy some hustle and bustle with a good measure of culture shock, perhaps Japan is an option for you? If you’re a busy minded person who finds that switching off completely is almost impossible, then occupying your mind with something else may be the way to go. Keep busy in Japan and experience a different culture and some different diving. Okinawa offers some weird and wonderful diving in the way of underwater sculptures, an abundance of marine life and wreck diving. While you’re at it, try some divine food, get lost in Tokyo and Osaka and get around the country with ease using the local train systems. Enjoy the hustle and bustle without the chaos or disorganisation. However, be ready for a bit of a challenge in the way of a language barrier… perhaps study some Japanese on the way over?
