Consisting of little more than two shops, a café, a hotel, an ATM and an airstrip that could land a 737, Munda is one of the more remote towns you might travel to. It’s just one hour’s flight from Honiara, and future plans are in place to upgrade the airport to take international flights. Munda was the centre for the Roviana people, who were head-hunters with a rich cultural history. You can take a tour of Skull Island on your surface interval, where the skulls can still be viewed today. There are a large number of WWII relics all around the area. A tour through the virgin rainforest will take you to waterfalls, past beautiful and exotic bird and plant life, and you can paddle traditional canoes and snorkel over the fringing reef.

The diving at Munda will leave you speechless. The warm, tropical waters will have you returning to this beautiful little corner of the world year after year. There are fantastic walls for those who like pelagic animals like big sharks and rays, and coral gardens and slopes for macro fans with pygmy seahorses and other critters. The brightly coloured hard and soft corals are in excellent condition and accessible to both snorkellers and divers.

As well as reef, there are numerous WWII wrecks including fighter planes, bombers, a Japanese freighter and even a site where the US dumped their equipment. One such wreck, the Bell P-39 Airacobra is a plane wreck that sits upright on the sandy bottom in 28 metres of water. The visibility at this particular site is usually quite good and a number of marine species including gold-spotted sweet lips, leaf scorpion fish, frogfish and more, making for excellent photographs.
