Kota Kinabalu

ABOVE THE WATER

Kota Kinabalu is the capital city of Sabah. It bustles with activity and accommodates a huge range of visitors from backpackers to luxury travelers. You could easily spend a couple of days wandering around Kota Kinabalu, as it is usually known, exploring the restaurants, bars, shopping, the Night, Wet and Filipino Markets, and don’t miss out on the excellent open seafood restaurant on Kampung Air.

Kota Kinabalu is a great base for exploring Mt Kinabalu (a challenging 2-day hike) or Poring Hot Springs, where you might find an enormous Rafflesia flower or the Nepenthes pitcher plants. To the south you also have white water rafting and firefly trips. To the west is the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (TARP), where you can visit the islands of Gaya, Sapi, Mamutik, Manukan and Sulug.

BELOW THE WATER

Off each of the islands surrounding Kota Kinabalu there are a number of dive sites that offer a myriad of underwater landscapes. Image macro life, sloping walls, healthy hard and soft corals and fantastic marine life! There are also a number of wreck dives including the Rice Bowl Wreck, the Upside Down Wreck and the Usukan Wreck. Most dive sites are sheltered coral reefs and not too deep, ideal for novice divers.
