The Gili Islands are found off the northwest coast of Lombok and are known for the white sandy beaches, crystal clear warm waters, laid back lifestyle during the day and fantastic social scene at night. A popular destination for tourists, they consist of an archipelago of three small islands; Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno & Gili Air. There are no motorbikes or cars on the islands meaning you can either walk on foot, pushbike, take horse and cart or boat around the island. Getting to the Gilis takes about 20 to 30 minutes by boat, however options from other areas are opening up with speed boats and ferries available. Once on the islands it is an easy 15 minute boat ride in-between each island.
Spend your days diving, cycling, sunbaking, playing beach volleyball…. whatever your heart desires! Scuba diving off the island is extremely popular and there are a number of dive shops to provide you with the right gear and services. Expect to see manta rays, sting rays, turtles and a myriad of tropical fish. There is also some great macro life hidden amongst the hard and soft corals gardens not far from the shores of the island. Trawangan has the most dive operators but PADI and SSI licensed dive operators exist on all three islands.
Gili Trawangan is the main and largest island. It is around 3km long and 2km wide meaning you can easily grab a pushbike and ride around the whole thing. If you’re headed to the Trawangan for a quiet getaway you might get a rude awakening. The main drag is consistently bustling with sellers and buyers, bikes, horses and carts, restaurants, cafes, bars, minimarts, dive schools, backpackers and more.
For those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the main strip yet still have the option of partying, there is the alternative of staying on the other side of the island where you can still easily walk home after a few cocktails on the beach! Resorts are popping up all over the island as the tourism continues to grow, meaning more options for activities, accommodation and more
Gili Air is much more secluded that Trawangan, and offers a private, intimate getaway with fantastic snorkelling as well as a number of other activities such as stand-up paddle boarding and kitesurfing.
Meno is the smallest of the three islands and has minimal tourists and a limited number of accommodation options. Generally speaking, it is perfect for those wanting lazy days on a secluded beach. It is great for those lovers of nature offering both a turtle sanctuary and bird park. See a number of exotic species of birds including the macaw, flamingos, cockatoos, pelicans, eagles, parrots and more!
