Kadavu

Above The Water

Kadavu is the fourth largest island in the Fiji group and is approximately 35 minutes flight southeast from Nadi. It is an island of awe inspiring volcanic mountains and miles of untouched beaches. It is yet to be discovered by tourists and maintains its traditional Fijian village way of life. The Kadavu inhabitants believe that the Octopus God made a deal with the Shark God to protect them from shark attack. You’re unlikely to find octopus or shark on the menu here.

There is plenty to do on the island including rainforest walks, bird-watching, guided sea-kayaking tours and more. The road system in Kadavu is very limited, with most transport by boat.  As a result of this, a prehistoric facade remains on the island and each of the villages still rely largely on sustenance agriculture. There are no banks on Kadavu so you will need to bring cash with you. Hotels can sometimes exchange AUD notes in small amounts, and take Visa and Mastercard. The bird life on the island is also a large tourist attraction. Deep within the rainforest there are a myriad of bird species including the celebrated Kadavu Musk Parrot. In short – Kadavu is about nature, simplicity, local culture and of course, fantastic diving.

Below The Water

Kadavu Barracuda

Kadavu is home to The Great Astrolabe Reef, the main diving drawcard here and it is the main source of tourism on the island. It runs for 100km, making it the fourth largest barrier reef in the world and offers a huge variety of dive sites, from passages to pinnacles, hard and soft coral outcrops, and many accessible manta ray cleaning stations. You can see eagle rays, large groupers and napoleon wrasse and other big animals. Please see below for a sample of dive sites:

Eagle Rock

This signature dive offers a variety of underwater landscapes, all in the one dive! Explore sunken boulders, coral encrusted pinnacles, narrow channels and sheer walls, with something interesting in every direction you look. Huge napoleon wrasse and groupers patrol the site, posing for photos and watching divers curiously.

Naiqoro Passage

This passage is a marine sanctuary of the south of Kadavu. The colours of this site are unsurpassed, with a myriad of brightly coloured corals covering the site. Look more closely and find intricately detailed anemones and soft corals, it truly is a photographer dream. Expect a visit from the resident sweetlips, snapper and potato cod.
