SRI LANKA


The Island of Sri Lanka lies in the Indian Ocean to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal. Formerly known as Ceylon Sri Lanka  is a small island in the Indian ocean of 65,000 square kilometres. With a  population of 18.5 million, a tropical climate, lush green forests and rich history it is a destination not to miss.


Colombo is the capital of Sri Lanka and the  gateway into this beautiful country full of amazing sites, people and adventure. 


Around 400,000 tourists visit the country each year to take in the sun the sea and the sand.  With a warm tropical location Sri Lanka is a great  tourist destination and has a wide range of   geographic features  and is rich in natural beauty.


Large parts of the  country are covered in tropical  forests, with hundreds of rivers flowing through them, often cascading in awesome waterfalls. The country is famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, coconuts, rubber and cinnamon.


Sinhalese and Tamil are the two official languages of Sri Lanka and English is fluently spoken by approximately 10% of the population.


There are a number of options – the two most popular routes are with Malaysian Airlines to Colombo Via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore Airlines via Singapore.  Both options offer fantastic stopovers in there transfer ports.

GENERAL INFORMATION:


CLIMATE: Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with a distinct wet and dry season. Colomobo  and the low lying coastal areas have an average daily temperature of 27 degrees Celsius daily. Ocean water temperatures average is 27 degrees Celsius all year. Monsoon season is from May to August for the islands South West half, while the Northern and Eastern region monsoon period is from October to January.  The best time to travel is from December to March for the west coast and April to September for the east coast.


CURRENCY: The local unit of currency is the Rupee. One Australian Dollar is approximately 39.02939 Indian Rupee.


DRESS: Light, casual clothing is all that is recommended for this hot, tropical climate.


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Australian and US passengers will require a passport which is valid for at least six months beyond intended stay. A visa is issued upon arrival and is valid for 30 Days.


HEALTH REQUIREMENTS: Refer  to your doctor for the latest medical recommendations and inoculations.


LANGUAGE: Sinhala and Tamil are both the official languages of the nation, with 80% speaking Sinhalese and 18% speaking Tamil., however English is spoken at all resorts and tourist areas.
